Drivers are prompted to play the “rating game,” which prompts them to modify their behavior in response to platform surveillance and to self-discipline for maximizing their ratings.
This in turn shapes their perceptions of the quality of their work and the fairness of the rating system. In the end, this can lead to racial bias, as evidenced by a lawsuit filed against Uber by non-white driver Thomas Liu alleging that Uber’s star rating system disproportionately affects minority drivers and led to their termination.
